Day 44

Honored By Friends While Helping Others

I want to thank the Crape Myrtle Festival (CMF) Board for the “Board Emeritus” honor you presented to me at the host party on Saturday, April 11, 2015. CMF has done tremendous work for  HIV/AIDS and LGBT organizations over the past 35 years. CMF was a huge part of my life where I began as a volunteer on the court in the early 2000s, then served as co-chair for the gala in 2006 and served on the board until 2011. In addition to the the “Board Emeritus” medal, I was also surprised with a relic from the year I co-chaired the gala. That year, we had a “science” theme and had the gala at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. Our team wore “lab” coats at the gala that year and I was reminded of that this past Saturday evening when I was represented with one! We had a very interesting gala that year in 2006 when I co-chaired with Eddie Sartin where we had RuPaul as our entertainment performing in the Natural Sciences museum. Can you picture RuPaul performing in the NC of Natural Sciences Museum? Yes, we made it happen!  We had a huge turnout that year, a lot of fun and raised a substantial amount of money for our community.

I recently had pulled together all of my old notes, photos, print materials and a lot of memorabilia from the years when I worked with CMF.  I put them together into a box and on disks and gave them to Bill Donovan this past weekend so that they can become part of CMF’s legacy.  One of the items I was most known for was designing websites and graphics for CMF. You can view some of the design work I did for CMF on my portfolio.

In recent years, I’ve not been able to attend CMF events as much as I would have liked as John and I have focused on raising our family, however, I made friends during my years with CMF that I will always cherish. With my recent cancer diagnosis, it warmed my heart to be back with CMF this past Saturday evening. You truly surprised me and I was humbled to be honored. This year’s CMF court did an outstanding job with the host party. They have an exciting theme for this year’s gala and as long as my health holds up, I look forward to supporting CMF at future events and to be at the 35th CMF Gala in July.  Thanks again CMF Board!
